Welcome to the Quilt for Refugees website!

Innocent men, women and children are being imprisoned in Australian detention centres. Their only crime has been looking for safety and security in a country that signed the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, stating 'everyone has the right to seek and enjoy in other countries asylum from persecution'. (Article 14)

Appalled by what is happening in our country, we have come together as concerned citizens in this visual expression "quilting" which is a traditional form of protest.

I AM NOT AN AUSTRALIAN WHO BELIEVES IN LOCKING UP CHILDREN.
I AM AN AUSTRALIAN WHO BELIEVES IN THE HUMANE TREATMENT OF REFUGEES.

The first quilt was made by a diverse group of people in Illawarra, with a centre piece made by a detainee in Villawood Detention Centre.  Some were made by children, one by an 11 year old who sewed her grandma's buttons on in a peace sign.
